120 Cats in One Island??
Japan is home to many popular animals, including cat. However, did you know that there is an island in Japan with over 120 cats? Yes, it’s true! Aoshima Island, also known as Cat Island (Neko no Shima), is a place where cat lovers can experience a feline paradise.

Aoshima Island used to be part of Nagahama in Kita District, but until 2005 it was included in Ehime Prefecture. The island’s population has declined since the sardine fishing industry stopped; As a result, fewer and fewer people live on this island and it is only dominated by the elderly population.
The Role of the Cat in Aoshima Island
Apparently, the local residents on the island had a need for cats, which resulted in their presence. Due to the proximity of the location to the beach, there was a high population of rodents that caused damage to fishing boats. As a solution, many residents began keeping cats to combat the rodent problem. Over time, the cats settled and began reproducing in large numbers.
The number of cat populations continuing to grow all the time, residents also have a strategy to sterilize cats regularly. This is intended so that the cat population does not experience a significant increase every day.
The ratio of cats to humans on this island is significant, with approximately six cats for every one human. The population of the island is estimated to be around 15-20 people, while the number of cats is approximately 120. Local residents take care of the cats by feeding and looking after them on a daily basis. The cats are highly valued for their ability to protect the island’s territory from pest attacks, such as rats.
How to Visit Aoshima Island?
If a place lacks a uniqueness beyond reason, it cannot be considered authentically Japanese. The presence of hundreds of cats on an island is an intriguing draw for visitors, but the incomplete tourist facilities at the location remain a hindrance.
Only about 34 people are allowed to visit the island each day due to limited tourist accommodations. Despite having several restaurants, lodgings are scarce. The local residents aim to protect their area from damage and pollution caused by a large number of tourists.
